Woman holding Choice is a Human right placard sign at protest

We at the YWCA NYC are saddened by the June 24th Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade which has been established law for fifty years. Our work, to redress racism and empower women and girls to pursue their dreams of education, family and careers, is impacted by this turn of events. We stand with our sisters in continuing to advocate for access to health care and protection of the right to decide when and if to have children.

Today’s decision most strongly affects low-income communities. Women of means will always have choices and this outcome is yet another example of the economic disparity that deeply challenges the people we serve. Our 164-year history as an institution has always been to challenge the status quo and provide opportunities for economic advancement amongst underserved communities.

We rededicate ourselves to this mission because, while the names of the women we serve may have changed over the years, their needs remain critical. Join us as we work for a brighter future. While we feel disheartened by today’s action, we will persevere in our work to transform our society to a world that is just, equitable, and compassionate.

There is important action you can take today in support of reproductive freedom – contact your US Senator and urge them to support the Women’s Health Protection Act (S. 4132).
