It is with great sadness that I notify our community of the sudden death of educator and civic leader, Sarah Gund, who was to receive our Grace Hoadley Dodge Distinguished Service Award at this year’s 165th Anniversary celebratory gala. Sarah passed away on August 17, 2023. A lovely tribute to Sarah’s work and life may be found here.

Sarah’s commitment to education and her unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of those around her were evident in every aspect of her work. Her visionary leadership and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the education landscape, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential.

Sarah’s civic leadership was equally exceptional. She understood the importance of community engagement and social change, and she channeled her passion into creating tangible and lasting improvements. Her involvement with numerous charitable organizations, advocacy groups, and community initiatives showcased her commitment to building a better and more equitable world for all. It is no surprise that she was chosen to receive the Grace Hoadley Dodge Distinguished Service Award, an honor that aptly recognized her exceptional contributions.

We were eagerly looking forward to celebrating Sarah’s achievements and contributions at our 165th Anniversary Gala on October 11th. It is with a heavy heart that we announce that the Grace Hoadley Dodge Award will now be presented to her posthumously by William D. Rueckert, President of the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation. We are deeply grateful that her husband, Geoffrey Gund, will join us accept the award on Sarah’s behalf. This gesture underscores the profound impact of her work and the legacy she leaves behind.

While we mourn Sarah’s passing, let us also celebrate the remarkable life she lived. As we reflect on her accomplishments, her kindness, and her unyielding spirit, let us draw inspiration from her example. In her memory, let us renew our commitment to education, social justice, and community service, and let us continue the work she held so dear.
